Create quickly interesting effects with combination Ctrl+Alt+~ in photoshop
Combination Ctrl+Alt+~ is to create selection by choosing bright color areas on the picture automatically. Now we will do examples to see how useful is it to shorten steps in our work.
1. Brighten up the picture or skin: -
Open the pic you want to do.
Ctr+J to duplicate it we have Background
copy. Between two these layers we create a new fill layer with white
like that:
-
Choose Background copy, press Ctrl+Alt+~ we will have:
This step to choose bright area on the picture automatically.
Press
Delete and Ctrl+D to deselect we will get:
Quicker, useful and
better result to brighten than familiar ways i have used.
2. Change color of the pic: - Open your base. Here i use the pic of flowers.
Ctrl+J to duplicate it to get the copy. Between two these
layers we create a new fill layer
with 9db5f3. Choose background copy, Ctrl+Alt+~ then press Delete we
have:
- Choose fill layer, change the mode to Pin Light.
Our result:
You can repeat these steps till you get the tone you want . You can
do the same techinque with pattern, gradient or texture.
3. Here is an example i do with texture.
- Open and duplicate your base as always. I use this stock:
- Create a new layer between two first layers and paste this texture
into it, move it to position you feel fit your base.
- Now what i want is to store the light of the texture on the
origin pic. Hide the eye of background copy, choose the texture layer
and press Ctrl+Alt+~:
- Now choose and turn on the hidden layer, we have selected area:
- Click Delete and Ctrl+D to deselect we have:
- Come back to texture layer and set it to Pin light 100%. Ctrl+B to
adjust color:
Midtones:-28,31,-100
Shadows:-73,100,-100
Then Levels with Ctrl+L:
Then erase with soft brush, flow 19% on unneccesasy parts:
Right click on this layer, choose Blending option:

okay, Choose Background copy, press Ctrl+Alt+~ this part doesn't automtically select the areas that needed to bright for me...? and when i delete it deleted the whole face or the area that i wanted to change the color tone.
The keys correspond to the following on a regular US QWERTY keyboard: ~ = RGB channel (I suspect the key to be used in non QWERTY keyboards would be the key immediately before the 1 key). 1 = 1st channel 2 = 2nd channel 3 = 3rd channel 4 = 4th channel
In an RGB picture, only there are only three channels. Pressing ctrl + 1 or 2 or 3 will display those respective channels, and give you an idea of what you're going to be selecting if you use (ctrl + alt + 1, ctrl + alt + 2, etc). ctcl + ~ goes back to RGB, and basically ctrl + alt + ~, creates a selection based on luminosity of all the channels together, hence the actual image.
